CVSA’s 2024 International Road check Set for May 14-16: Focus on Safety and Compliance

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that the 2024 International Roadcheck will take place from May 14 to 16. This event is a prominent enforcement initiative focusing on the inspection and regulatory compliance of commercial motor vehicles across Canada, Mexico, and the United States over a period of three days.

During this time, CVSA-certified officers will perform comprehensive inspections on commercial motor vehicles and their drivers at various checkpoints, including weigh stations, temporary inspection sites, and through mobile patrols. These inspections are designed to ensure adherence to the safety standards and regulations set forth by federal, state, and provincial/territorial authorities. The data collected during the 72-hour period will be analyzed, with results to be published later in the summer.

This year, the International Roadcheck will place additional emphasis on two critical areas: tractor protection systems and the prevention of alcohol and controlled substance abuse among drivers. With an increasing number of drivers appearing on the U.S. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DACH) list, the CVSA aims to curb this concerning trend by reinforcing the importance of strict workplace policies against substance possession and use.

The focus on tractor protection systems highlights the importance of vehicle components such as the tractor protection valve, trailer supply valve, and anti-bleed back valve. These components are essential for vehicle safety yet are often overlooked during regular inspections. To support drivers and fleet operators, the CVSA has released an inspection bulletin, available in multiple languages, detailing how to properly check these systems.

Inspectors during the Roadcheck will carry out the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a detailed 37-step process that assesses both the vehicle and driver aspects. This inspection covers the vehicle’s crucial systems and components as well as the driver’s compliance with operating standards, including hours of service, necessary documentation, and seat belt usage.

Vehicles and drivers that pass the Level I or V Inspection without any critical violations will be eligible for a CVSA decal, valid for three months, signifying their compliance. However, should inspectors find any out-of-service violations, those vehicles or drivers will be barred from operation until the issues are resolved.

In cases of inclement weather or other extenuating circumstances, inspectors may opt for a Level II Walk-Around Driver/Vehicle Inspection or a Level III Driver/Credential/Administrative Inspection, which do not qualify for a CVSA decal.

The CVSA is a nonprofit organization that includes various commercial motor vehicle safety officials and industry representatives from North America. The alliance is dedicated to preventing commercial vehicle incidents and fatalities through cooperative safety regulations and educational initiatives. Their mission is to enhance safety and regulatory enforcement through guidance, advocacy, and education, benefiting both governmental bodies and the transportation industry.
